Parent and Tot Program

A small group-style program for beginning skaters ages 3 and 4 in a fun and joyful environment with parental assistance. Parents are required to have some skating experience and able to support their children. This class provides the fundamental skills of skating including falling down/getting back up, stopping, jumping, gliding, forward and backward skating etc. The first 5 to 10 minutes of this class will be an off-ice/warm-up session for the skaters to become comfortable in their skates and to learn some of the crucial techniques in basic skating skills before reaching the ice. PARENTS must be able to skate while supporting their child; if their skating is not to Skate Canada requirements, a helmet must be worn.

All participants must:

  • Wear a proper fitting CSA approved hockey helmet, bike helmets ARE NOT permitted. THIS IS A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT.

  • Wear warm clothing which allows ease of movement.

  • Wear warm mittens or gloves. THIS IS A MANDATORY REQUIREMENT.

  • Have proper fitting skates, if skates are too big it will be difficult for your child to balance and learn the necessary skills properly. Hockey or figure skates are recommended, PLASTIC SKATES DO NOT ALLOW FOR PROPER MOVEMENT OF ANKLES AND HINDER PROGRESS OF REQUIRED SKILLS.

  • Adults must have skating experience (CanSkate Stage 5 level or better), if not, they be required to wear a CSA approved hockey helmet.  The parent/guardian  must be able to skate well enough themselves to support their child.  Coaches are there to provide lessons and assistance where needed but primary assistance will be provided by the accompanying parent/guardian.

  • The accompanying adult does not have to be a parent, but must be 18 years or older.  They are required to register and pay the Skate Canada Annual Membership fee.
