Changing Room Protocol & Guidelines

The aim of this policy is to provide coaches, board members, parents and skaters, or any other person associated with the Fergus Skating Club, with guidance regarding conduct in and around changing rooms and changing protocol. Whilst this list is not exhaustive, it will serve as a basic guide and will be reviewed annually.The policy may be subject to immediate change to reflect a change in the constitution or particular circumstances that may arise.The decency of all parties is of paramount importance and appropriate steps should be taken to ensure that there is awareness and compliance with this policy. Any person knowingly disregarding these guidelines will be subject to the appropriate consequence. In circumstances where the safety and security of underage individuals is potentially compromised, the authorities will be notified.

1. Children must be supervised at all times and are the responsibility of their parent(s) within changing rooms and/or around the arena.

2. Specific change rooms will be made available for the following groups; adults (18 years and over) needing to change will use the Gender Change Room and/or the washroom facilities, children twelve and under & their caregivers will use the designated “family change room”, teen females will be provided a “teen females only” change room. Any teen male skater will be provided a “teen males only” change room. Coaches will utilize the “Coaches’ Room”.

3. Adults (parents, coaches, caregivers, skaters) are not permitted in the teen change rooms for the privacy of the teens and the safety of all involved.

4. Volunteers should not offer to do tasks of a personal nature which a young person could do for themselves, unless requested to do so by their parent/guardian, remembering that some young people may need assistance with tying laces, and fitting of helmets etc.

5. Adults (e.g. coaches, judges, other volunteers) will not change or shower at the same time using the same facility as the skaters.

6. Children and/or adults should not be allowed to change clothing in public places, such as seating or viewing areas within the arenas.

7. Every effort will be made to accommodate safe changing spaces for any skater. As a result, it may be necessary for the skating club staff, together with the arena staff, to offer alternative changing facilities when requested. This should be in accordance with the points raised earlier.

8. In the event of a child having to return to the changing room through injury or illness, they should be accompanied by their parent or guardian. This should be considered an exceptional circumstance.
